what is amateur radio?
amateur radio is a licensed radio service in the united states administered by the fcc. it is a hobby shared by over 600,000 in the us, and millions throughout the world. amateur radio's principles include advancing the radio art, promoting goodwill nationally and internationally, adding to the pool of knowledge with experimentation, and providing emergency communications.
salem is a lively place to enjoy amateur radio! there are dozens of open repeaters on vhf and uhf, plus many hams with interests in hf, digital modes, contesting, antenna buidling, emergency communications, to name a few! we are fortunate to have a community of hams here with very broad interests. if there is an aspect of amateur radio you are interested in, then there is someone nearby who can help you!the arrl, the national association for amateur radio, has a great website introducing amateur radio.
